Food License Online:
An Overview of FSSAI Registration/License

FSSAI is an abbreviation used for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. An FSSAI license online or directly through authority is required before starting a food business. Manufacturers, traders, and restaurants who deal with food must obtain a 14-digit registration number printed on food packages. FSSAI's primary goal is to regulate and check for safe food manufacturing, storage, and transportation practices among Food Business Operators (FBOs). You can apply for a food license online through the portal of the FSSAI, depending on the business's size and nature.

What are the benefits of a Food License?

Informed Consumers

The quality of the goods we consume is essential, especially when several products and types of food are available on the market. Knowing the quality and standard of an item is very important for every consumer. Having a food license signifies that food consumption has complied with India's hygiene requirements' Food Safety and Standards Authority.

Build goodwill

With the FSSAI logo, you know that the food is of a certain standard and hygienic to consume. As the FSSAI license helps spread awareness among the consumers, the goodwill gained in the market can then be used to drive expansion. You can obtain the food license online or directly from the authorities.

Which applies to you: FSSAI Registration or FSSAI License?

FSSAI Registration

Food businesses and allied activities like sales, distribution, trading, repackaging, and labeling can register in this way. A food business with a turnover of fewer than 12 lacs may apply for essential registration with the FSSAI. There are mainly hawkers, petty retailers, and temporary stallholders in this category. eCommerce food traders will benefit from the food license online registration.

No, it is not required. Utensils/packaging materials are not covered under the definition of food as per Section 3(n) of FSS Act, 2006 – so FSSAI License/Registration is not required.

All Food business operators, including pharmacies or medical stores selling Health supplements or Nutraceutical products, need to apply for the FSSAI license or registration.

If a Food Business Operator (FBO) has his food business premises located in two or more than two States, he must obtain a Central License for his Registered Office or Head Office in addition to license/registration for each unit/premise. This can be done through the Food licence online facility provided by FSSAI. Separate License or registration to be accepted for each unit/premise depending upon that unit's capacity or turnover from the concerned Central or State licensing authorities. Further, if any food business activity is conducted on a Registered Office/Head Office premise, the same shall also be incorporated in Head Office License.

FSSAI license is based on-premise. All kinds of food business activities conducted at the same premise can be applied in a single FSSAI license.

Yes, it is mandatory to declare a 14-digit FSSAI License or Registration number on cash receipts/ purchase invoices/cash memos/bills, etc., by all food businesses. When any operator issues 2 transaction documents, such as transporters issuing transport challan/ Bill, etc., and an invoice, then the FSSAI number needs to be mentioned on both documents. The only exemption will be the GST e-way bill and other govt documents which are system generated.

FSSAI licenses are valid for one to five years in each category, namely Basic Registration, State Registration, and Central Registration. You need to renew the food license online or as applicable within 30 days after your initial License expires.

FSSAI licenses are always defined by the location in which they are issued. You must register each location separately if you have more than one business location.

By law, all food business operators must obtain a license before they can operate. Those who fail to comply but continue to manufacture, trade, or distribute any food article may be fined or imprisoned for a period of up to 6 months. The imprisonment is likely to be accompanied by a fine, which may reach Rs. 5,00,000.
